I don’t believe in “diets”. What I do believe in is a healthy & balanced sustainable lifestyle. To me, this means not sacrificing or completely eliminating anything I enjoy consuming including the occasional desserts, alcohol, or comfort foods. Life is just too short for that! What do I believe the secret to living a healthy lifestyle is? Everything in moderation & consistent exercise!
Of course I participate in the periodic indulgence of my favorites (CULVERS I MISS YOU SO MUCH), however, this type of lifestyle continuously has me in a pursuit of finding “healthier” alternatives or copycats so I never feel like I’m restricting myself from anything at all. Strict restriction notoriously can lead to binging or just “throwing in the towel,” altogether at any goal.
So I bring to you, one of my absolute favorite recipes I have trialed for over the past year to improve & finally in my humble opinion, master. You can even ask Ryan, my taste tester, he has tried them ALL!
Chocolate Chip Banana Bread
Chocolate Chip Banana Bread

- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 cup mini semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1 tsp vanilla extract optional

- Thoroughly mash bananas using a fork. With a mixer or large spoon, mix in eggs & applesauce.

- Add in chocolate chips, do not overstir. Optional: Add 1/4 cup chocolate chips to the mix & save 1/4 cup for the top of the bread.
- Spray a loaf pan with cooking spray or coat with butter. Evenly pour mix into a loaf pan.
- Optional: Evenly sprinkle other 1/4 cup of chocolate chips on top of batter.
- Bake for 45-55 min or until lightly golden brown around the edges.
- Allow to cool in pan for 5-10 minutes. If needed, use a knife along the edges to easily detach bread from pan. Invert pan to release bread & reflip bread onto a cooling rack.
- Serve & enjoy while warm or store in a container in a cool, dry space.

While I absolutely love Chocolate Chip Banana Bread & perhaps (am bias to) believe that I have mastered my own version of this long loved breakfast delicacy, I recognize that it’s lacking in just one thing: adequate protein. Understanding that my body requires protein first thing in the morning to transition my body from a catabolic state (muscle burning/wasting, fat storing) to an anabolic state (muscle building/maintaining, fat burning), it’d be wise of me to pair my beloved, yet less protein dense, C.C.B.B. with a high protein compliment…
*Protein Coffee enters the room*
Protein Coffee: “Ahem, excuse me. I can surely, deliciously, help with that.”
