Remember that unsourced, unwritten rule “don’t eat after 7 p.m.”? Pardon my French mom & dad… but it’s a bunch of B.S. To lose or maintain body weight, the issue isn’t eating after 7 p.m. it’s what you’re eating. When it comes down to weight loss, every diet (low-carb, paleo, ketogenic, vegan/vegetarian, etc.) is based upon one simple daily equation:

Less calories in + More calories out = Weight loss

(Food) + (BMR + Exercise)

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) = number of calories needed for daily body functions at rest orwhat you burn if you lay on the couch all day & don’t exercise

Click here to calculate your approximate BMR or invest in a smart scale (on sale today!!) that can measure complete body composition including BMR, body fat, water, BMI, muscle mass, etc.

For weight maintenance or gain, your equation may look like:

Same Calories in + Same Calories out = Weight maintenance

More Calories in + Less calories out = Weight gain

What to Eat Before Bed

In order to keep our bodies in an anabolic state or fat burning, muscle sustaining/building state, consuming protein within an hour before bedtime is essential to boosting metabolism. When we sleep, our bodies are put into complete rest, relaxation, repair, & restore mode for a fasting period of 6-9 hours. That’s a long period to go without eating! Without protein consumption, our bodies automatically transition into a catabolic state or fat storing, muscle burning. Minimize the time your body is in a catabolic state, and maximize the time your body is in a fat burning, anabolic state, by consuming protein before bed & when you wake up in the morning!
