JUMPING FOR JOY

After 25 years of life & much contemplation, I finally decided I was ready to take the leap (no pun intended) & checkoff one of my most exhilarating bucket list items to date- SKYDIVING! This wasn’t just your everyday jump off a plane though- I plunged from the WORLD’S HIGHEST SKYDIVE experience in Monterey, California. When the parachute finally propelled, I glided so elegantly to the Earth’s surface in true awe of the magical atmosphere that surrounded me.

For the first time in my life, I had never felt so alive.

Now you may be thinking to yourself: What sane person would voluntarily jump out of a plane? Which I applaud as an extremely legitimate question. For me, this experience was a complete mental experiment to evaluate the relationship & influence of Fear within my life. Too often than not, us humans are faced with opportunities or crossroads that challenge us in every way & leave us with hesitation asking ourselves,”What if?”

What if I’m not smart enough?

What if others judge me?

What if I get lonely?

What if I’m rejected?

What if I lose money?

What if it’s all for nothing?

What if I fail?

As Mahatma Gandhi once said,

“The enemy is fear. We think it is hate, but it is fear.”

5 Steps to Overcoming Fear

Defeating your fears is much easier said than done & can take weeks, months, or even years for individuals to come to terms with & overcome.

Follow these exercises below to begin analyzing your own fears.

1. Accept it

I’m here. I’m scared. I realize it. I want to overcome it.

2. Identify it

I’m fearful of _______. I’ve been scared for (this amount of time). This fear may have stemmed from ______.

3. Feel it

My fear makes me feel: anxious, sad, weak, lonely, scared, helpless, etc.

4. Face it

This fear of _____ is holding me back from ____. I no longer want to feel (negative feelings). It’s time I take control & dismiss the “what if’s.”

5. Practice it

Every day/week/month I am going to confront my fear by doing _____. It doesn’t need to be big, but I know that the more I do this the easier it will become & guide me closer to overcoming my fear.


Over the past year, I have fully adopted & implemented the mindset that self health should be my #1 priority. I’ve come to the realization that when my mind & body feel my best, I am the most fearless version of myself. I conquered my fears of: leaving home, moving across the country, changing jobs every 13 weeks, being in a long distance relationship, making new friends & maintaining friendships back home, & everything in between. Imagine if I had let the “what if’s,” get in my way. Would I feel as happy & fulfilled as I do now? I’m confident I wouldn’t. Instead, I likely would have felt regret or sadness, wishing I would have ignored the “what if’s,” & instead asked “why not?
